download tomcat from apache.org and self-extract jdk from java.sun.com.

E.g apache-tomcat-5.5.26.tar.gz and jdk-6u6-linux-i586.bin

step1
untar tomcat in desired location, let’s say /home/tomcat:

root@localhost /]# tar xvfz apache-tomcat-5.5.26.tar.gz

this makes your tomcat’s path: /home/tomcat/apache-tomcat-5.5.26

step2
next is installing java. make your downloaded jdk an executable file by:

root@localhost /]# chmod 755 jdk-6u6-linux-i586.bin

then execute, given your target path. in this case, it’s /home/jdk:

root@localhost /]# ./jdk-6u6-linux-i586.bin /home/jdk

your java path now is: /home/jdk/jdk1.6.0_06

step3
open /etc/profile, and add the following lines under HISTSIZE:
CATALINA_HOME=/home/tomcat/apache-tomcat-5.5.26
JAVA_HOME=/home/jdk/jdk1.6.0_06

and in export command, include CATALINA_HOME JAVA_HOME

then save and restart.

if you don’t want to restart your linux box, type this command:
root@localhost /]# export CATALINA_HOME=/home/tomcat/apache-tomcat-5.5.26 JAVA_HOME=/home/jdk/jdk1.6.0_06

to verify:
root@localhost /]# echo $CATALINA_HOME $JAVA_HOME

this will give you your tomcat and java’s path.

i love using keyboard shortcuts. it gets me going and it makes work faster. i’ve encountered it during my first job in paranaque and i got the hang of it.

ms windows shortcuts really helped people like me in that department and i observed others who were well used to it and noted in mind what shortcuts they were using. hehehe. you can call me a spy.

as time went by, i appreciated it more for being so handy. it made me look so talented. specially when i did technical support thingies in production floor. fingers dance gracefully and before they knew it, i’m done with what they asked for.

in line with my aim for developing this seemingly a talent, i’m exploring shortcuts for linux and mac desktops. though i don’t use linux gui anymore (thanks to my buddy who’s now a daddy for influencing me). but in case OCness attacks, here are the links:

i’m excited to use OO version 3.0. this is currently available for beta testing and written evaluations are most welcome.

this version includes updates like ms-office 2007 compatibility, open document format support, and others. but what i am most excited about is OO for macintosh will be the first version to run without using x11, how cool is that? and it will also have the same aqua based environment so it’ll blend well with mac.

in previous releases, i needed to activate x11 to make OO operational. and OO didn’t look anything extraordinary. i’m no mac user but i’m glad with this update.
