Moving!

Friday, August 6th, 2010

And so I wasn’t able to update this blog (again, for the nth time).

I just don’t have enough energy to play around like I used to. Though I’m trying to get things going like finish reading a novel: The Stranger by Albert Camus.

Anyway, I’ll be packing my things because we’re moving to the new building and I’m in the first batch from our team. And for what it’s worth, I’m definitely looking forward for the new parking space. They said there are many parking spaces: basement and open parking. Of course, I’d like to park in the basement, less sunlight, less effect on car’s paint.

That’s all for now. My train of thoughts is practically on a hung state.

Which Notebook?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Wait! Before anything else, I already have a notebook. This is what I was given for my daily job and for on-call duties (not Call of Duty okay?). And not that I’m unsatisfied, I really am.

I’m using Lenovo Thinkpad X200 and even if we’re having ups and downs, it can go at par with my previous service workstations I have ever used.

The reason why I’m continually searching for good buy mobility hardware is for someone else (yikee!!). I am more technologically inclined so I take responsibility of getting the right HW for the right job.

As far as daily needs is concerned, here are what I can say:

  • Video/music Streaming/Playback
  • Internet browsing
  • Minor photo editing
  • Major documentation

I had this weird idea of getting a MAC but maybe it’s an overkill considering the tasks mentioned. Instead of purchasing an overpriced laptop, I just might get something that is running on either Linux or Windows 7. Though the user just might prefer the latter (duh, I can’t make a Linux convert out of this).

Here’s what I have in mind:

  • Samsung N220
  • Toshiba Portege (forgot the exact model, eeeyuck!)
  • For the Acer fanatic in me even if I’m the one who’ll use it: Acer Aspire 4810T Olympic Edition and Acer Timeline 1825PTZ; Acer Aspire One 721; Acer Aspire AS4553.

How about you, any suggestions? No worries! I’m not in a hurry. As long as my budget permits, this baby will be an instant gift from me. hehehe.

Which Distro?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I’m still unsure with which distro to use for my not-so-new-not-so-old home desktop.

My current HW is running on XP simply because I’m not the only one who uses it but now that my mom is getting the hang of using her notebook and my dad has his own HW too, I get to have the liberty to choose what to do with my pc. Yeah!

Anyway, what I need now are suggestions. I haven’t gone through a list of distros that might interest me so maybe you guys would like to share some. I rarely use GUI for Linux so I’m not sure which one am I going to be comfortable. And whenever I’d use GUI, all’s there is Gnome.

Also, I saw from one of my posts that I’m not into aero-feel. Guess what, I’m considering it this time. It’s like mantra for me to feel goody goody after a day’s work.

To give you an insight of what I usually do:

  • I mostly watch TV series and movies
  • Do torrent downloads
  • Seldom play computer arcade games
  • Browse the net ’till I drop
  • Blog as often as I can
  • Burn lots of DVDs
  • Read eBook

And here’s what I plan to add:

  • Improve this blog site, that would mean setting up xampp with WordPress
  • Go over Java again but not necessarily like the old times, with this I’d need Eclipse IDE
  • Maybe continue with Perl (I’m still not sure though)
  • Continue my pursuit of using Gimp for digital photos that I edit, hehe

So far that’s what I have in mind. Specs of computer transferred to my possession are:

  • Intel Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz) Hyper-threading
  • 2GB RAM
  • 80GB primary HD
  • 128MB VGA Card (forgot the brand) tsk! 256MB Nvidia Graphics Card

That’s it! Hope I’d get responses. before June 11. Yes, I have a deadline. Because I need to do file transfers (a bunch of them) and physical movements of computers in the house.

jah!

Proxy and Transparent Proxy

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Somebody was asked what’s the difference between proxy and transparent proxy. I also then asked myself, “Yeah, what’s the difference?”

The only difference is there’s no need for a user to define proxy settings on one’s computer just to be able to use the network for internet related activities.

The reason is, transparent proxy is already a part of the network infrastructure. Meaning, it’s explicitly defined. Therefore, all HTTP traffic will pass through proxy server even without telling it to do so.

That simple.

The Desk

Monday, April 26th, 2010

This is my box now.

Yup! They gave me my test box. The previous one was pulled out before I even plugged it in. This box was what the recently resigned teammate used to have and I asked him to leave it to me because I don’t have one. And now, here it is!

And so my desk is getting crowded. I have my local phone, LCD monitor, laptop, keyboard, mouse and the new box. I’m getting OCd. I want to re-arrange my desk. hahaha!

Other things on my desk are my tumbler, desktop calendar (I know, old school, but a very special person gave it to me hehehe), pen holder, headset, laptop bag, shoulder bag, a bottle of: lotion and alcohol, a tube of moisturizer and a bunch of papers.

You can tell that a girl owns my workstation because of what it has. At least it doesn’t have too much girlie things like stuffed toys. But I supposed when we move to our new office, I’d be bringing my Spider-Spud. That isn’t girlie either, I know right? hahaha!
