An MS Environment to a FOSS Advocate

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

I just moved to a new workplace and as expected, there’s what we call ‘culture shock.’

Although in my case, it’s more of application shock. I am a FOSS advocate. I use FOSS in any machine that I get my hands on. I always search for FOSS counterparts of commercialized softwares. I encourage other people to use FOSS too.

Then it began with telling me to use MS Outlook as my mail client. It went on when they gave me a short list of applications that are usually used. Whoa!

I’m trying to get the hang of it while keeping my advocacy alive. I might be a little non-compliant to their tools just like with virtual machines, I still want VBox for it instead of their licensed VMWare; Notepad++ instead of another licensed UltraEdit; Greenshot instead of Snagit; among others.

However, servers are *nix machines. Ooooohh… love love love. hehehe

Repair Vista MBR with EasyBCD

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

On my old notebook, yeah Misato, I had to remove the Linux partition just to make room for more files.

Anyway, removing Linux then pretend everything’s fine is really stupid cause it will not work. hehe..

So, I downloaded a Vista Recovery Disk to repair its Master Boot Record (MBR). But before I could write its iso to disc, I remembered I had installed EasyBCD on Vista.

Therefore, another way to repair Vista’s MBR is to use EasyBCD. All I had to do was Manage Bootloader then Write MBR.

EasyBCD is really easy cheesy.

After that, I’ve removed Linux like nothing happened.

In line to my internet hiatus during weekends, watching several tv series and japanese anime is keeping me busy.

I just finished watching Leverage Season 1.
It’s really fascinating. whoosh!

I’m still waiting for Wednesdays to come for new episodes of Bleach. It’s just that last 3 consecutive episodes are fillers. ugh!

I’m currently watching House MD Season 1. Yeah, I’m a late bloomer on this one. Even on Chuck, hehe.

Anyway, a not so old japanese anime caught my eye. This is ‘Full Metal Alchemist.’

I only saw very little of its new season, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, via Animax but as anyone would want, I’d like to see it from the beginning.

Therefore, Mr Shot of Life, don’t forget the DVDs okay?

Not everything..

For some reason, I really like watching Nat Geo. And recently, I saw one of their episodes on Air Craft Investigation. So even though I was already sleepy, I tried keeping myself awake just for it.

The episode was about de-icing mechanism of the air craft. And the story revolved around the capability of that device that might have caused the death of 64 people, including cabin crew and pilots.

Anyway, I find it cool on how they were able to isolate the problem and how they come up with conclusions. Another is how fast they were able to gather data, really fascinating.

Nothing, just want to share that not everything I do is Linux related. hehe

Is it because of the Eclipse?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I’m not sure how it all happened but the first thing I noticed on this laptop is the inability to start ICS service. All of a sudden I could not access shared files on the network. Aha!

With the help of the internet, I tried searching for answers. One thing I did, which I think I shouldn’t have, was updating the system. After that, the laptop’s system config could not be found. Therefore, I had to repair it.

Although another issue that I looked at before that was the conflict between Ethernet and MAC Bridge Miniport. I was on it already then *tadan!!!* system repair was next to none.

Then someone reminded me about today’s Solar Eclipse. She’s saying that everybody’s acting weird, maybe it was caused by this occurrence. So I thought, maybe it is. And this laptop was one of the weird ones. hehehe.
